Fun questions to help your child open up

There’s so much to discover within each child if we take the valuable time to pause and listen. Children don’t voluntarily confide or share about their lives until sufficient psychological safety is established. An excellent way to encourage children to naturally express themselves is to develop a daily habit of striking intriguing conversations with your child.

Frequent conversations advance trust and trust fosters connection. When children feel connected to their parent, they feel confident to resonate their true feelings and become more transparent with their intentions. The more children feel they can convey their ideas, interpretations, opinions and thoughts about the small things without reprisal, the more likely they will be able to confide about the seemingly larger issues further on in their lives.

The regular and simple practice of active listening yields big and long-term advantages. Parents really want to learn about their child’s concerns, opinions and thoughts. To raise resilient and joyful children, it’s imperative to listen to your child without consecutively imparting between right and wrong or good and bad behaviour. In contrast, as a parent, consider yourself as being invited into your child’s world whenever the opportunity presents itself. This shift in perspective will enable you to become a listening and supportive parent.

We provide our children with an invaluable gift by simply being present when they speak to us. When we hold ourselves and listen to our children with the intent to discover, support and connect without judgement–we empower them to express themselves as the intelligent beings that they essentially are.

You can try to get the conversation started with our top-ten list of questions, or devise some of your own, but don't forget to remain entirely open-minded to wherever the conversation eventually goes.
